IREM Collection Volume 2 Review

You've heard of Metal Slug, but it's a shame you've never played GunForce. This collection of arcade gems includes both the original console and arcade versions of GunForce, GunForce II, and Air Duel, with numerous quality-of-life changes perfect for the experienced and uninitiated.

Included in the collection are the original GunForce, in both the SNES and Arcade versions, GunForce II's first official worldwide console version, and the arcade-exclusive Air Duel that was only ever released in Japan. Each game includes groundbreaking additional features, making these titles more than a simple blast from the past. The DNA of Metal Slug is hardcoded into each of these titles, where you play as paramilitary mercenaries thrown into the frontlines reminiscent of the best action films of the 1980s and 1990s.

The no-mercy, no-holds-barred approach of these titles is enhanced by console-exclusive changes, such as infinite lives and additional ammo styles. The stages are fast, frenetic, and beautiful, featuring painterly old-school pixel art that fits right in to the futuristic, apocalyptic military world. Blast your way through each stage and rack up high scores as you run'n'gun on foot or in several different vehicles.

IREM Collection Volume 2 is perfect for old and new fans alike, and is the sort of anthology that has made the Switch such an endearing console. It sits strongly alongside similar collections, such as Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, and the numerous classic Mega Man collections available.
