YARS RISING
ON THE RADAR
Yars' Revenge is an important jewel in the Atari crown. The 2600 was known mainly for its arcade ports, and Yars' Revenge was a rare winner that was crafted entirely in house. Now, Atari is teaming up with beloved developer WayForward to add an unusual new chapter to the Yars mythos.
Emi Kimura has a simple job: Get inside the headquarters of the QoTech corporation, install a hacking device, and get out. But QoTech isn't your typical evil conglomerate - they are engaged in strange "biohacking" research that enables humans to do the impossible. This technology has awakened something alien in Emi's body, and the only way to figure out what's going on is to pull QoTech apart.
Yars Rising is a platformer which looks to have a lot of variety in the gameplay. Emi navigates using a combination of action platforming and stealth. As with any good Metroidvania, upgrades in one area allow access to secrets in others. But there's also a retro twist: Emi will occasionally need to breach a security system, which is done through a series of minigames inspired by the Atari 2600. Fans of Yars' Revenge will find that their old-school skills translate nicely into these reworked versions of the Atari classic.
Incidentally, Yars Rising also has one more little inducement: A front-to-back remake of Yars' Revenge with a touch of WayForward charm. That alone might be enough to get some to snap this one up.
Yars Rising will launch on September 10.
